When designing your solar PV system, try to locate the battery storage system as close to the PV cells as possible. Power can be lost in long cables so this will reduce this possibility. It also prevents the cable covering the cells, which would reduce their generation capability.

Swap out your tank water heater for a tankless type. While they do require energy to heat the water, they require only a small amount of energy to heat a smaller amount of water. Tankless water heaters are available to purchase in many different sizes; you can heat water for your whole house, or just a single faucet.

Switch over to getting information through email. Try to use paper as little as possible. Not only will the business save on the cost of paper, but you will be saving energy from the production of that paper as well. Not to mention, it protects the environment for everyone.

There's much to be learned about roofing, and there are many tough decisions to make. The volume of material may be daunting, so you need a consolidated source of information. In the following paragraphs, you'll find a number of excellent roofing tips.

Inspect your roof yearly. Spring and winter months tend to damage the roof the most. So, be sure to inspect your roof during or after these troublesome months.

http://issuu.com/rusticfuzz3375/docs/1430154408553e6ca8160af

When fixing leaks, do it right the first time. You need to ensure that the entire structure of your roof is sound. Check every square inch of your roof for problems; you might have a number of issues.

When you must climb on the roof, wear some rubber boots. Even if it's sunny and dry, these boots can grip well. Do not put yourself in dangerous positions when on the roof.

When hiring a roofing contractor, checking their background references is an absolute must. Once you have their references, give them a call and ask them about the value and quality of the work. Also, go and look at the different addresses. Before you choose a contractor, take a good look at their work.

Co-workers, friends, and family should be the first resources for picking a contractor. Ask those you trust if the work they had done was good quality and whether they think the price was reasonable. In addition, you should ask them about the contractor's clean-up procedure and if they provide warranties.

Make sure you do your homework before you decide on what contractor you will hire to do roof work. Never choose the cheapest option or the flashiest ad! Try researching various local roofers. You can use online resources or ask trusted friends or family members.

If your roofing company can't fix a problem for several days, take some time to look for a quick band-aid fix. Nail heavy plastic over the leak. This isn't the best way to handle a leak, but it will hold you over for now.

Check your roofing materials thoroughly before installation. Leaks often occur quickly due to improper installation. Being sure that the shingles are in perfect condition and that you are using the correct nails to hold them securely will help the roof to last much longer.

To maintain your roof, keep it free of sticks, leaves and other debris. Accumulation of such material helps water pool, which is harmful. With water sitting on top of your roof, the layers beneath your shingles are more likely to rot, causing leaks that can be expensive to repair.

Make sure to get several quotes prior to choosing a roofing contractor. There are contractors who will try to milk you out of your money. If you don't want to get ripped off, you should consider all your options before deciding on a final choice.

You shouldn't feel overpowered by all the roofing information out there. You needn't be an expert on the subject. Once you have a good educational foundation, you're ready to rock. You've learned a lot from this article, and now you just need to put that knowledge to good use.

Garden Privacy Screens - Backyard Landscaping Ideas

No matter where you live, there's nothing better than relaxing outdoors on a warm summer night watching your backyard landscaping ideas come to life.

Unfortunately, re-landscaping your whole backyard throughout the course of one growing season could be back breaking, costly and requires major planning.

Even though you are landscaping simply one section of the lawn at a time, you still need an overall plan. Utilizing graph paper, sketch out the permanent structures on your property such as the house, out buildings, deck and trees.

Here are some suggestions you'll dig:

Screening with Plants

If your lawn does not have a fence, you might want to think about planting a row of hawthorn, juniper, arborvitae, or a combination of these bushes to create privacy and offer a backdrop for future flower beds. A smartly placed evergreen screen will also give a windbreak from winter winds and drifting snow.

Planning a Border Flower Bed

The most difficult part of designing a border is choosing flowers that complement one another, both in color and height. The list of perennials I advise here is for a six foot wide bed in a primarily sunny situation. Wide, in this case, means outward from the plant screen or fence, not the length of the bed.

Use 3 or 5 plants for every kind of flower and allow 16"-18" in between every plant. Allow 20"-22" between the different plant groups. Planting an odd number of plants is much more visually appealing than an even number.

Permit sufficient space at the rear of the bed for access. This will also prevent choking off essential air and light from the plants in back.

Island Bed

An island bed, as the name suggests, is planted in the middle of the lawn surrounded by a sea of grass. It can differ in shape and size in accordance to your imagination and available space. Scale the plants from tallest in the center to shortest at the edges.

Preplanned Gardens

I understand all of this Latin mumbo jumbo can be challenging for first time gardeners, it was for me. If you want a ready made solution, Direct Gardening provides a wide assortment of preplanned gardens designed to take all the guess work out of plant selection and placement.

Water Feature

Imagine the reflective beauty of a pond or the soft splashing of a man made waterfall. How about a 100 foot high waterslide? Maybe next year.

Do Your Lawn a Favor

Before you buy any vegetation, visit a real garden center for advice on drainage and soil preparation. Also, bring a copy of your plan; a soil sample and an extra credit card just in case you can't wait years to make your backyard landscaping ideas come true.

Available Free Deck Plans

There are free deck plans that are available from a variety of sources that cover many different types of decks, from pool deck plans, to screened in decks. These free deck plans are convenient for people to use when deciding what type of deck to build and allow individuals that have some carpentry skills to plan and build the deck themselves. However, the free deck plans should be checked carefully against other resources to make sure that they cover all the bases of constructing a safe, sturdy deck. In addition, there are other considerations that should be taken into account when deciding to build a deck so that the deck will be safe, useable and legal, an enjoyment for years to come.

Types of Decks

These free deck plans can be found for a wide variety of decks. There are some that are designed to go around pools, both above ground and also pools that are in the ground so that there is a patio around it. There are also free deck plans for hot tubs so that they are sturdy enough to support the weight of the hot tub as well as provide a beautiful place for sitting or cooking out when not enjoying the benefits of the hot tub.

There are also plans that can be found for wrap around porches and more complex decks where there are many different levels or staircases that are needed to reach the deck. There are choices in railings for the various decks and also choices in the types of materials that are used to build the decks, each one having certain pros and cons to them. There are vinyl materials that are used today to build decks that look just like wood but do not require the maintenance that wood requires and will last a lot longer. These types of free deck plans are often good around pools and hot tubs because of the amount of water that inherently gets onto the deck.

Free deck plans also have to be checked according to the various laws and ordinances that are in a particular area. There are local zoning ordinances that have to be followed when building a deck which can place limits on the style of deck that is built. There are also neighborhood codes that have to be followed as well, so that the standards of the neighborhood are upheld. In addition, before beginning construction on the deck, there are often building permits that have to be obtained so that the construction can legally begin. It is also wise to consult with the local utility companies to make sure that there are not any buried wires or cables that could be disturbed when doing the construction according to the free deck plans.

Design trends in kitchen cabinets: a brief look at what's hot in kitchen design.

The kitchen has evolved into more than just a room of undistinguished storage cabinets and cooking utensils. It has become a key gathering place where people go to eat, drink and be merry. In some respects, it is the most popular spot in the home.

Research backs that up. According to a recent study on home shoppers' preferences, commissioned by Merillat Industries, 15 percent of a person's time in the home is spent in the kitchen--the most of any room. Designers are cashing in on this trend by styling kitchens to become a focal point of the home. What follows are some of the recent trends culled from interviews and trade shows throughout the past year.

BIG IS BEAUTIFUL

The new kitchens continue to be big, open and expansive. The galley kitchen of the '50s has become obsolete in all but a few older homes. Yet, with the increase in size and scale comes new challenges in kitchen cabinet layouts.

Kitchen designers have a number of strategies to fill all the space builders are giving for kitchens. For example, homeowners are requesting double islands, as well as bigger islands, with separate lighting accessories on the ceiling. To fill up the vertical space, another option for designers is to use larger moulding buildups and stacked cabinets. One example would be stacking a 48-inch-tall cabinet with a 12-inch-tall cabinet on top, with mouldings on top of that.

In reaction to the openness of these large kitchens, customers are not using as many wall cabinets as they have traditionally. Instead of a solid bank of cabinets, the design is for a few cabinets to be used as columns or arch supports, as part of the open kitchen concept. Another trend in large kitchens is for cabinets to be used as walls to divide spaces. Pedestal cabinets also are becoming more popular, especially when used as a post for a column or as an architectural element in the room.

TRADITIONAL AT HEARTH

Although many homeowners prefer mixing and matching styles and colors, as a general trend, the traditional style--with its crown mouldings and architectural details--continues to be preferred. According to a study on consumer preferences by Decora and Kitchen Bath Design News, dealers rank traditional cabinet styles as the number one choice, followed by transitional, modern or contemporary and retro/-mid-century modern styles.

Modern or contemporary, in a softened form, is also prevalent in many cabinet designs. In evidence at some of the recent design shows, many manufacturers are recycling older, existing door styles and pairing them with newer finishes and options for a contemporary look--not stark, but a stylish, sleek alternative to the Old World styles that continue to be popular.

Another alternative is the application of horizontal grains on the doors and drawers. Although popular for a number of years in Europe, this look is just beginning to make inroads into the North American market. Typical species used for this application are wenge, walnut and ipe.

Mixed into contemporary, at all levels, is the use of aluminum and glass doors as accents. The variety of choices continues to expand, with an enormous number of glass insert styles available, including clears, opaques and patterns--giving designers almost endless possibilities.

The "endless possibilities" theme could be seen in other areas as well, including finishes.

A GLAZED LOOK

Common to perhaps all styles of cabinetry is the continued popularity of glazed finishes. One reason for the trend is that glazing often enhances the appearance of color, adding depth and richness to the wood. Helping spur the popularity of glazes is their custom, almost furniture-like appeal, versus a mass-produced finish.

With regards to finish, another trend still going strong is the use of two-toned painted cabinets. Instead of a solid bank of cabinets, consumers are mixing and matching finishes, as well as species, to achieve a more aesthetically appealing, relaxed look that mimics the rest of the home. "Blending finishes, styles and materials gives a vintage feel to this eclectic look," says Connie Edwards, CKD, CBD and director of design for Shenandoah Cabinetry, American Woodmark Corp.

And although white continues to be a popular, neutral color, maples and cherry--particularly those with glazed finishes--continue to rank high. Along with natural oaks, quarter-sawn white oak seems to be a new hot trend. In the past year, more and more cabinet manufacturers prominently featured this species in their showroom displays; not just in a customary Arts-and-Crafts or Mission style setting, but often in an updated, modern style.

For the kitchen, the Decora survey says, colors in warm earth tones, ranging from deep browns to mossy greens, are the hot colors of today, stealing market share from the traditional palettes of deep blues, yellows and bright reds. White on white, or with a color contrast, also is popular in the marketplace.

Options are not only abundant for the decorative outside of cabinets, but also for the inside. New solutions to maximize interior space and functionality continue to be introduced. Particularly popular are pullouts as well as two-tiered drawers, with smaller pullouts behind a single-drawer front.

TRADITIONAL STAYS TRUE

Traditional is considered by many to be the most popular style of kitchen design. This style is characterized by crown mouldings, architectural details, and rich colors, typically in dark or honey tones. The Wood species most commonly associated with this style tends to be oak. Other perennial favorite styles include:

Country: characterized by a rustic, weathered look, oftentimes in earth tones or muted colors. Baskets, bricks and beams may be used in the decorating of the kitchen itself.

Southwestern: think desert--tan and warm orange, with a touch of blue and green in the mix. Terra cotta is usually part of the decorating scheme, along with wood, ceramic tiles and other natural materials.

Victorian: old, dark and Gothic--in a pleasing sort of way. Cabinets tend to be dark wood, with chrome hardware and accents. The kitchen itself also may feature elaborately trimmed mouldings and sconces for lighting, all in very neutral or dark colors.

Modern: constantly changing, this style may be characterized by sleek lines one year, ornate the next. Most recently, the modern look has encompassed stainless steel and two-tone finishes, often in contrasting colors.

Rv Tips For Keeping Your Rv Mold And Mildew Free

For RV'ers, nothing is more enchanting than a long road trip with many sights to see along the way. However, nothing can be more frustrating than having problems with your vehicle while on the road trying to have fun. Especially if those problems involve water leaking into your RV while you are out touring a rainy region or flooding from a leaky toilet or sink. Although mold can form while you out on the road, most mold and mildew formation occurs during those months when it is in storage. Under a tarp or stored in a warm, humid storage facility, your RV could become an incubator for mold and mildew. Once you've got it, it can be tricky to learn how to clean up mold properly - the best method is prevention. To follow are 3 tips for preventing mold and mildew from forming in your RV.

Check Your Plumbing and Ventilation

Every time you leave for one of your RV adventures, check or hire someone to check your toilet valves, lines, and your RV toilet stop to ensure it is all working correctly. Make sure your bathroom is vented properly because poor ventilation in small spaces with ample water is a perfect place for mold to grow. Don't forget to have someone look at the plumbing under your sinks and your waiste disposal system. The last thing you need is a leaky toilet or sink supply line soaking your carpet while you're blissfully charging down the road to that next destination.

Keep Tabs on Your Roof and Ceiling

Make sure your roof is water tight by inspecting the caulking, moulding and seams. Examine your roof carefully at least twice a year for exposed fasteners, cracked seams, UV deterioration, mold and mildew, water spots on the ceiling. One clear indicator for RV roof deterioration is a chalky white substance left in your driveway when you wash your RV. If you are a "do-it-yourself-er" (DIY-er), you could start by spraying water and trying to determine the source of the leak, replacing leaky roof vents, removing old caulking and replacing it with new, and repairing damaged seams. If your roof is in need of repair and you are not a DIY-er you may want to try a liquid roof system with no caulk, seams, or leaks.

Prevent Mold from Forming During Storage

Store your travel vehicle under a cover that will protect it from the elements while allowing it to breathe, while venting inside water vapor to prevent mold, mildew from forming. One can find a whole host of RV covers that are triple - layered to provide ample UV protection, air vents to reduce wind lofting and inside moisture for around $300.00 with a 3-year warranty. Though the best method is prevention, if you do discover you have mold, you need to think about the health implications. Make sure it is cleaned up properly, and, that you get an air cleaner or purifier to keep yourself and your loved ones from breathing in the spores.

Check for Hidden Mold and Clean it Up

Sometimes mold clean up requires some good detective work where you will have to learn to "follow your nose". Follow the smell and feel around for dampness. Even when mold is not visible on carpets and walls it may be growing on carpet padding or inside walls. Inspect, or have inspected, your air conditioning system ducts for mold, dampness. Once mold spores form in a heating or AC system, they will be spread around the entire space. This could cause some major health problems. For more on how to locate mold and remove it, read this

Backyard Builds: Man Constructing 22-Foot Tsunami-Proof Pod - Make:

Palo Alto resident Chris Robinson was pondering how he would protect his family from a tsunami after the devastating disaster hit Japan back in March of 2011. His answer was the Tsunamiball- an escape pod of sorts made almost entirely out of wood.

Sure, others have designed their own wooden ships but Chris has no boat building experience and has never sailed, however he does have some impeccable woodworking skills.

The wood-framed enclosure features a captain’s window and several portholes running the length of both sides.

Chris began work on the Tsunamiball back in 2012 and has been working on it in his spare time ever since. He designed the survival pod using Adobe Illustrator and a little help from some engineers to help calculate whether his design would float or not. The boat was designed using marine-grade plywood coated in xylitol and epoxy, which will strengthen the 2.5-inch hull.

While most of the frame is complete and even features a captain's window and several portholes, it's still a work in progress, however he plans on outfitting it with flexible solar panels, an electric motor and a compostable toilet. It will also feature foldout beds, an electric stove kitchen area and plenty of storage.

What is the pressure reducing valve in residential plumbing?

According to Watts Water Technologies, a pressure reducing valve helps conserve water usage and energy by restricting water pressure from the water-supply main. Depending on where you live, plumbing codes may require installation of pressure reducing valves.

Families Of Three Teenage Girls Believed To Be Headed For Syria, Beg Them To Come Home

Families Of Three Teenage Girls Believed To Be Headed For Syria Beg Them To Come Home

On Tuesday, the families of three teenage girls believed to be headed for Syria were reported missing, after telling their families they were going out for the day. The girls were last seen at Londons Gatwick Airport taking a Turkish Airline flight to Istanbul. Teenagers Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and a third female age 15 who is not being named at the request of her family are straight-A students at Bethnal Green Academy.

British police have been using social media sites to try and contact the teenage girls on their cell phones, but so far all attempts have failed. The girls are believed to be headed to the part of Syria that is being controlled by the ISIS terrorist group. The police are also stating that the girls are close friends with another 15-year-old girl that fled to Syria in December.

In an interview with Sky News, Metropolitan Police Commander Richard Walton stated his concern by saying,

"We are concerned about the numbers of girls and young women who have or are intending to travel to the part of Syria that is controlled by the terrorist group calling themselves Islamic State."

"It is an extremely dangerous place and we have seen reports of what life is like for them and how restricted their lives become."

"It is not uncommon for girls or women to be prevented from being allowed out of their houses or if allowed out, only when accompanied by a guardian."

"The choice of returning home from Syria is often taken away from those under the control of Islamic State, leaving their families in the UK devastated and with very few options to secure their safe return."

The number of Westerners who have traveled to Iraq and Syria is believed to be around 3,000, including as many as 550 women, according to the London based Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

Former Metropolitan Police border control officer Chris Hobbs says that security checks for people departing from U.K. airports make it a "walk in the park for jihadis and girls like this" to leave. According to FOX News, officer Hobbs was also quoted as saying,

"At the moment you go through security, you get on the plane, you might be checked by a private security guard. If you're on a watch list then you will ping the system. If you're not on the radar then the odds are you will get on the plane without too many problems."

The parents of 15 year-old Shamima Begum are just begging for their daughter and the other teenagers to come home. They told several media outlets on Saturday that they were not mad at their daughter, they just wanted her to come home where it was safe. Her family stated in their interview,

"Syria is a dangerous place and we don't want you to go there. Get in touch with the police and they will help to bring you home. You are not in any trouble."

In a similar incident last year, the Inquisitr reported that three teenage girls from Denver Colorado, ages 15, 16, and 17, also tried leaving home to travel to Syria and join up with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Syrian terrorist group ISIS. The three girls were detained in Germany however, and quickly returned to their families.

How To Handle Water Damage Restoration! by John Bergman

When you're faced with water damage in your house it can be overwhelming, but it is important to act quickly to prevent even more damage. Whether your damage was caused by a storm, broken pipes or any other disaster, not acting quickly can have serious consequences. If you've had fire and water damage, the problems are compounded.

If you've had a mild intrusion of water, it may be possible for you to dry it out yourself, but for more serious damage, you should call a water damage service that is qualified to deal with the problem. Don't let the situation reach the point that some of your structure has to be demolished and replaced. Hiring a professional water damage company can save you time and money in the long run.

When you have a wet carpet or flooded carpet a professional water damage service will have the equipment necessary to do the water extraction and water drying that is needed. One of the most important tools a professional can provide is an industrial vacuum to remove the moisture. Compared to a wet/dry vac these are truck mounted and can pull a tremendous amount of water from your house or business.

A professional water damage service will ensure that moisture is removed quickly thereby reducing mold problems. It is possible for mold to start growing in 24-48 hours after water damage exposure.

The hazards of mold growth cannot be over stressed. It's possible that mold can grow where you aren't able to see it, but it can still cause an unhealthy environment to live in. Respiratory problems result from breathing mold spores so mold must be removed.

A professional water damage company will have the ability to do mold detection as part of their service to prevent mold allergies or other mold related health issues. Cleaning mold from your house or business is as important as water damage restoration because of the health issues.

If you have a strange smell after a heavy storm or leaky faucet or pipe for example, this may be a tell tale sign that it's time to call a mold inspector. Household mold can be insidious and difficult to detect on your own.

When it comes to water damage clean up, make sure you hire a company that is certified and qualified to do the job of water damage restoration and mold detection and remediation. They should be IICRC certified and have good references for you to call.

Landscaping :: Riding Mower Jack - The Right Tool for the Job

If you are like most people, you more than likely perform regular maintenance on your riding lawnmower in order to make sure that it is in top operating condition. The fact is that regularly using your lawnmower exposes it to wear and tear, not to mention dirt and debris that can dull the blade and shorten the life of the motor. Changing the oil, replacing the belt, and even having the blade sharpened can go a long way towards making the more reliable for years to come. When it becomes necessary to access the underside of the more, a riding mower jack is the right tool for the job.

A riding lawnmower, whether it is a large lawn tractor or one of the new zero turn radius mowers, is a heavy piece of equipment that can be dangerous if not lifted correctly. Not only are you in danger of being injured, anyone who happens to be nearby may also get hurt if you rely on a makeshift system to lift the more rather than a specially designed riding mower jack that lifts and secures the mower in place. The sharp blade and moving components are an accident waiting to happen if you do not take precautions.

Fortunately, a riding mower jack is not an expensive tool to add to your collection. Just as you would use the right wrench for a particular bold, so too should you use a specially designed lift system when working underneath a lawnmower. It is not enough to simply lift a lawnmower either. Once the lawnmower is raised up it must be secured so that it will not move or fall while repairs or maintenance are being performed. Again, this is where a lawnmower lift comes in handy.

Whether you are working on your own riding mower or repair these machines for living, a riding mower jack can help you get the job done quickly, efficiently, and safely. If you have customers waiting to get their machine back then a jack can help you increase your productivity and profits without ever having to sacrifice safety in the name of speed. The next time you need to perform repairs on the underside of your riding lawnmower, do not take chances with the safety of others or yourself, invest in a riding mower jack and get the job done with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are using the right tool for the job.
